This slide shows the influences of goods traded and sold along the Silk Road. The three products shown were traditionally made in China. The technology to produce paper, silk worms and the idea of painted pottery or stoneware was all brought to Baghdad through trade from the East, China. From the readings, many other ideas and products also influenced the Abbasid Empire, for example teak wood for door carvings, and mathematical concepts like X. Students would be asked to discuss goods, ideas, influences today that influence our culture today and look at how the same happened in the Middle Ages in Baghdad.

I just slightly modified the slides by adding an additional slide. The final slide is inspired by the Teach California website from this module, and I would develop an investigation activity around that question. Students would read various sources and examine objects from the time to draw conclusions about the how people interacted in Baghdad during this time.

The Abbasids and the Golden Age of Islam is a remarkable study. It's a fun trip through myth-history when considering the opulence of Baghdad contrasted with the state of western Europe. To make this point with my classes I like to share the diplomatic exchanges with Charlemagne and Harun al-Rashid. This story by no means does justice to the metropolis of Baghdad but is does help to show the interconnectedness of the post-Roman world that young people may not consider.

As context, I teach Deaf and DeafBlind students who are English learners. I keep my slides as visually simple as possible (and in reality would actually put these two images on separate slides to enlarge them and help focus) and text would also be on a separate slide. In the use of these two images, the discussion would be in ASL (so no English text on the slide beyond the title). A previous slide or activity would include placing Baghdad in the world geographically either by a map or using the classroom globes.

I would have students analyze the two images looking for evidence of different aspects of life in Baghdad - for example values (nature as evidenced in the garden at the center of the city), trade and diversity (as evidenced in the picture of the people), science and math (as evidenced by the layout of the city and the balance in the picture of the people). We would use the see-think-wonder (observe-reflect-wonder) strategy to analyze the images closely.
