The last several years have seen a rise in social and political polarization that complicates and occasionally undermines civil discourse. Yet civil discourse remains a fundamental piece of democratic governance and humanities education. Through this professional development course, educators gain an understanding of the specific ways in which the humanities can open conversations around civility and comity. This training draws from examples in history, philosophy, art history, literature, and politics. Participants will develop curricular connections and classroom activities that follow the same model.
