1. The freedmen teachers were individuals who not only were fit to teach, but also had "motives of religion and patriotism". They were motivated to genuinely do good and care for others.
2. These teachers were often tasked with educating large amounts of children and adults in unsanitary conditions. Their job was quite difficult, but they were committed to their work and generally worked hard.
3. Mary Peake started a school for the children of former slaves in the fall of 1861. She was the first teacher hired by the American Missionary Association.
4. After the Freedmen’s Bureau agency ended, the schools closed their offices. They fell into disarray and students were transported to different schools.
