In your student groups, your task is to read one of the following articles about trash.  Each article has a different perspective on how trash and plastics are addressed.  You will need to highlight the facts to share with the class and then debate your article's point of view.  When preparing your statements be sure to think about the following guidelines:

  1. Use "I" statements to express opinions: This helps to personalize opinions to avoid making generalizations about entire groups of people.
  2. Actively listen: Pay attention to what others are saying, and try understanding their point of view before making judgments.
  3. Ask for clarification or to restate what was presented: This helps to avoid misunderstandings.
  4. Offer evidence from a credible source (teacher supported): This supports arguments and helps to establish credibility.
  5. Respect differing points of view: Show that you understand and value different perspectives, even if you disagree.
  6. Summarize and reflect: Check for understanding and show that you have been paying attention by summarizing what has been said

Once the discussion is complete summarize what you learned about plastics and trash. Use information from each article to support your stance on what we should do about this “trashy situation.” Include your thoughts about how reporters wrote each article.

Lastly, Reflect upon the classroom conversation. What were the talk moves you used to lead the discussion? How were you an active listener during this conversation?
