I have an assignment I created for this here.
I usually discourage students from using social media or popular news sources in their writing or discussions. Daily news outlets are trying to release information quickly, so it is difficult to verify. They also tend to chase shock-value or promote agendas. I like to spend a lot of time discussing ethos and building credibility. I begin the first day of classes.
I have developed a research project which ends in writing an argument. I certainly could use it to discuss the topics we are proposing here, however, I focus on conspiracy theories and serial killers currently. I have them create an annotated bibliography. Usually, students who choose to prove a conspiracy theory, change their minds and decide to prove they are bogus after the annotated bibliography because they cannot find good sources.
Here is the assignment. It takes many weeks to complete because I have many lessons about researching and writing. Here is a slideshow I use for evaluating sources.
