In one of my Spanish classes, students watched a movie called Mar adentro, in which one of the main themes is the euthanasia debate and the social stigmas. This topic is clearly very sensitive, so we try to maintain a civil discourse in the classroom. In light of the fact that this is a recent issue in different societies, I let students expand their research to different countries. First, in groups they search the library database for two articles about the topic and one from Google. After they read the articles, discuss with your group the following:

  • What is the purpose of the article?
  • What is the main idea?
  • How do they justify their position?

Using that information, students will pick a point of view and prepare for the discussion. They will read articles such as the following:

https://www.bioeticaweb.com/error-social-la-eutanasia/

https://revistas.comillas.edu/index.php/bioetica-revista-iberoamericana/article/view/11579

https://www-sciencedirect-com.ezproxy1.lib.asu.edu/science/article/pii/S0212656721002043

After that, we will begin the class discussion. (It is important to note that students have already read the guidelines before doing this activity).

Some of the questions that will come up are:

  • “What is the evidence that the articles share about the topic?
  • Can we trust the information they are sharing? Why?

Also, students will share their thoughts on the topic, after reading and listening to other viewpoints.

We will close the discussion by talking about the sources.

  • Is the author's expertise related to the subject? Are they an authority on the topic? Maybe through education, experience, or expertise in the field
  • Whose voices/viewpoints are not being heard?
