Lesson:
Students are given the topic of how the pyramids were built to research. Utilizing a school database, a youtube video (false hypothesis), and an article of their choice they must set forth a hypothesis of how the pyramids were built. In class, we discuss how students will find different information from different sources due to the time period. We discuss historical bias and how the author is influenced by their own research and conclusions. Historians are influenced by their academic exposure, points of view, belief systems etc.
Students will make a two-slide, slideshow demonstrating the hypothesis they have created and present it to the class.
Topics to debrief: Which hypothesis seems most reasonable and why, what influence did the sources of information have on your conclusions? How can you verify your information to determine its validity? Why haven't we figured out how the pyramids were built? What do you wonder about?
Sounds like an excellent idea. Students will find wonderful points and resources from both sides. I think the topic is great too as it will lead to colorful discussions about how it was built.
