Colored conventions referred to a series of gatherings that African Americans in the US attended during the 19th century. These conventions were held during the antebellum period and continued for 30 years or so after the Civil War. These were opportunities for African Americans to discuss important issues at hand. Some of the individuals who attended the conventions were Bishop Richard Allen, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, etc. The conventions aimed to address hot topic issues - racial inequality, newspaper work, etc. African Americans from all walks of life were encouraged these meetings. They were highly popular and many found purpose and truth in them. Major decisions were made at these conventions and people learned how to navigate things. African Americans could voice their concerns in ways that other conventions would not allow them to. They were able to really dive into what they were learning and understanding at the time.
