As blacks were becoming more in power whites were intimidated. Blacks had their own all black newspaper which was rare in these areas. White people did not influence this. They knew they had to do something about it.

Alexander Manly was the editor to the Daily Record news. On August 18, an editorial was published stating that African Americans were unfairly portrayed as violent and that that they can and should have consensual physical relationship between blacks and whites. The whites got a hold of this and they called it Vile and Villainous" and "An Insult to the White Women of North Carolina."
