As context, I teach Deaf and DeafBlind students who are English learners. I keep my slides as visually simple as possible (and in reality would actually put these two images on separate slides to enlarge them and help focus) and text would also be on a separate slide. In the use of these two images, the discussion would be in ASL (so no English text on the slide beyond the title). A previous slide or activity would include placing Baghdad in the world geographically either by a map or using the classroom globes.
I would have students analyze the two images looking for evidence of different aspects of life in Baghdad - for example values (nature as evidenced in the garden at the center of the city), trade and diversity (as evidenced in the picture of the people), science and math (as evidenced by the layout of the city and the balance in the picture of the people). We would use the see-think-wonder (observe-reflect-wonder) strategy to analyze the images closely.
