Compare the framework to the essential questions in your district and/or personal curriculum. In which ways are these different or the same?
A commonality I see between the framework and essential questions of the curriculum I teach is that it focuses on cause and effect. Another commonality I see, especially with the Governance is that it focuses on the common rules and understandings people made for themselves. I teach about ancient civilizations and the concept of the beginning of civilization and self governance is highly emphasized.
How does the Knarrative framework center Africans? Analyze/critique the standards in your state.
The Knarrative framework centers Africans because they are emphasized in throughout all of the essential questions. The cause and effect for each category places the Africans in at the forefront.
Compared to the standards in my state, I see many similarities. The Ethnic Studies starts off with a general history and delves deeper into specific people and their successes.
If you had to advocate for better/more African studies engagement, what would your argument be? Create a rationale.
I would argue that:
Better African studies engagement is essential for all students in my district. It promotes diversity and inclusion. It offers an opportunity for students to learn about their own identity or their peers. It gives students and teachers the opportunity for critical thinking about an idea and a history that we may have been taught one-sided in the past. We can unlearn inaccurate narratives and understand the truths behind an important history.
