1. In order to understand these texts, I needed to know some background knowledge of the life of Muhammad. It would be helpful for me to know how Muhammad was portrayed by different scholars, both during his lifetime and after his life. I need to understand the circumstances/upbringing that Muhammad had to fully understand the text.

2. I would make these texts relevant to my classroom by having students write about experiences that they can relate to from the narratives. Students learn better when the material they are absorbing is relatable and pertinent to real life scenarios.

3. I would share with students the context of these writings - it is important for students to know that Ibn Ishaq lived after Muhammad had died, so his portrayal of Muhammad is likely skewed one way or another. I would share with my students also the concept of what a biography is and why it is different than autobiography.

4. I could contextualize these readings by having students learn about medieval history in Europe at the same time that these writings are taking place. That way, they have a time frame to understand what is going on in the world at the same time.

  • What research did you need to complete in order to understand these texts?

In order to understand these texts, I would want to learn more from biased and unbiased videos or books about the Life of Muhammad. I want to be able to see and understand both sides of the stories and how Islam was evolving.

  • How would you make these texts relevant to your classroom?

I would make these texts relevant to my classroom by trying to find what my students have in common with them. We could have an open discussion on their thoughts, feelings, knowledge etc. Then, have them write about what they know or have learned.

  • What information would you share with your students when you presented these texts?

First, I would share to my students that all religions and all Gods are important to each person that follows them and emphasize that we should not judge but be more understanding and open minded. I would then introduce the life of Muhammad and why he is so special to many people worldwide.

  • Discuss how you would contextualize these readings for your students in a larger unit that you teach on medieval history.

I would first teach one at a time. Then, have students compare and contrast each one and dive into a deeper understanding of both.
