Wainana's approach differs because, in a dark-humored way, it highlights all of the negative perceptions that people who study Africa have established over the years.

A particular quote that stood out to me is " Africa is to be pitied, worshipped or dominated. Whichever angle you take, be sure to leave the strong impression that without your intervention and your important book, Africa is doomed." 

The idea that Africa cannot offer anything else other than tragedy, martyrism, or aggression is very interesting and misconstrued.
