I read and listened to "A SOLUTION IS FOUND IN SALT AND SPICE" by Fozia Ismail, who is Somali English. She describes how her mother, who grew up as a goat herder in the Ethiopian/Somali borderland but then immigrated to and raised a family in England, recreated the taste of fresh camel milk for her children by mixing natural yogurt, 7-Up, salt, and water.
The colonial space for Ismail is the Ethiopian/Somali border, which her parents were forced to leave but missed dearly. According to Ismail, camels are incredibly important for Somalis, and her mother pined the loss of fresh camel milk.
Decolonizing space for this author means recreating the tastes of Somalia wherever you are to the best of your ability. Ismail's mother was able to bring a bit of the Somali landscape to England with her through the recreated taste of camel milk and thus share this landscape with her children. Such foods can help ground future generations in their home landscape, even if they can never visit themselves.
