The first book I chose for my elementary students is "On my Papa's Shoulders" by Niki Daly. I chose this book because it talks about a little boy being very close to this dad. He also lives with his extended family (grandpa, grandma). My kids can relate to this because many of them are hispanic and also live with their grandparents.

This book, I would not recommend it to my elementary kids but maybe to my middle and high school teachers to read or introduce to their students. "Don't Look Back: A Memoir of War, Survival, and My Journey from Sudan to America". I would recommend this because we have a high population of students that have migrated from Central America and have experienced something similar to this. I want them to know they are not alone.

The third book would probably be "Desmond and the Very Mean Word: A Story of Forgiveness". I especially like this book because it shows what forgiveness is and how it can definitely be accomplished if one truly tries. I also like that it teaches a lesson that you cannot be mean to people no matter the color of their skin. It reminds of Ghandi's quote "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind". If kindess isn't shown then the world would be a very ugly place.
