I would use the materials in this lesson to create a cultural lesson comparing and contrasting the Martyrs of Córdoba and the life of Joan of Arc. Cultural Connections: Who is a martyr? Similarities and differences of the Martyrs of Cordoba and Joan of Arc.
Students would be asked to define the word martyr and share what they may previously know about martyrdom. We would look at a map of Spain and find Andalusia and its proximity to north Africa. I remind students of previously learned cultural connections of “la Francophonie'' or the French-speaking world, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
At tables, students will read the text, Martyrs of Cordoba, and work together to summarize the article. In a “speed dating” style activity, students will circulate around the room sharing their summaries and noting similarities. As a class, we’ll create a single summary.
Once we have an understanding of the Martyrs of Córdoba, I will ask students if they have heard of Joan of Arc and what they may know about her and her life. Students will have several minutes to discuss what they know with a table partner. With the entire class, I’ll call on volunteers to share what they know.
We will watch a short YouTube video about the life of Joan of Arc (Joan of Arc: The Biography Shorties). While watching the video, I will ask students to note how Joan became a martyr and what actions in her life might resemble the actions in the lives of the Martyrs of Córdoba.
On the map of France in the classroom, we will locate the cities mentioned in the video. I will also show on the screen a map of France during the Hundred Years’ War. As a class, we’ll discuss how location played a part of both martyrs and how those in power played a part in their martyrdom.
As a wrap up activity, I will ask students in groups to imagine they are able to interview both Joan of Arc and one of the martyrs of Córdoba for a talk show. Students will write 3-4 questions and write the answers for Joan and the martyr. The next day, groups will role play for the class.
