After reviewing the 3D renderings, select a building and provide a summary that includes the location, primary purpose and/or use of the site, as well as a connection to the content you teach.
The Old Fourah Bay College in Freetown, Sierra Leone, was the first Western-style university in Sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 1827 Fourah Bay College, according to UNESCO, "offered the only alternative to Europe and America for British colony West Africans who wanted a university degree" until WWII. Sierra Leone was a fascinating experiment by well-meaning British colonizers who hoped to set up a free and modern (read: Western) society for formerly enslaved people in Africa. Education was a cornerstone of that vision, and this college played a key role in educating many prominent African civil servants and leaders, as well as missionaries. This connects with my curriculum of history of the Atlantic World, because it is a great example of Western ideas being introduced (and foisted) on Africans, with some positive and other negative results.
