Colored Conventions began in 1830 and throughout the 1890s, they were initiated by the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop Richard Allen. African American men and women came together during the conventions. This group of people included important African American writers, organizers, church leaders, newspaper editors, educators, and entrepreneurs.  The conventions took place all across the country. Throughout time it spread to different areas including the South of the United States. Most conventions took place in  churches, city hall buildings, courthouses, lecture halls, and theaters. The goals of the conventions were to fight for African American civil and human rights. Furthermore, these conventions helped address the challenges that many African Americans were facing during this time of injustice and violence.During conventions, it was discussed how they can achieve labor, education, and legal justice. Having read the minutes collected, the significance of the conventions was to empower the African American community. They came together and raised funds to support Black schools, newspapers, and the community, and protested against racial inequality and violence.
