  • What were the events that led to the Wilmington Massacre?

There was a group of Southern Democrats who were white, and they wanted to conspire and lead a mob of 2000 men. These men were chosen to overthrow the Fusionist biracial government that was recently elected in Wilmington.

- How does slander, lies, and propaganda from the Wilmington Star and The Wilmington Messenger contribute to the massacre and the burning of the The Daily Record office building?

Both of these newspapers published articles and cartoons with racial and discriminatory stereotypes that portrayed African Americans as violent and dangerous. As such, people had misconceptions in their minds and were led to do serious harm through the massacre and burning.

  • Who was Alexander Manly and why was he significant to the events of the Wilmington Massacre? Alexander Manly was the editor of the Daily Record at the time. He actually advocated for racial equality and brought the injustices of the massacre and surrounding events to light.
  • Please read a page of The Daily Record from the Alexander Manly scrapbook digital collection at the Cape Fear Museum. Describe what you read and provide the date of the article. [The link was broken and I was unable to view the record/article.]
