While the essential questions in my curriculum focus primarily upon "big picture," abstract concepts, the Knarrative framework centers African voice, perspective, and experience.  The epistemology that grounds the Knarrative framework requires students to reconsider the knowledge they take for granted.  The social studies standards in Pennsylvania are divided across four disciplines (History, Civics/Government, Economics, & Geography).  They are bogged down by discipline specific jargon and obscure details that make it unwieldy for teachers to instruct and impossible for most students to grasp.   On the other hand, the Knarrative provides a story that encourages discussion, reflection, and exploration.  By centering the experience and stories of Africans, this framework opens new venues of study.

Rationale:  African studies should be a general education requirement and should inform other areas of study in history, the social sciences, and STEM.  To overcome misrepresentation and misinformation, students need to hear a wider range of voices and experience different ways of viewing the world.

Jessica, great job here. I agree that African studies should be a general ed requirement in high schools.
