The colonizing in this piece takes place in all portions of life. From the freedom of movement to xthe right to a grave, the colonial architecture has overlain that of the native. The African environment is still there, it has just been hidden under the colonial one.

Freedom here is the recognition of the footsteps of the slaves' ghosts, the recognition of the slave who saved the baby, the names on the gravestone, and the recognition that a slave murdered is different than a misty morning or a rainy day, that one is unnatural.
