Komla Dumor's points make great sense. It matters that you center  Africans telling their own stories otherwise you have only one point of view and often, miseducation. The storyteller will tell the story they want you to hear. Just like here in America, Blacks who were enslaved didn't get to publicly share their stories. Their enslavers told stories of how they liked to work hard. Even in the book Medical Apartheid, many of the White Doctors wrote how their subjects (Blacks Free and enslaved) were willing participants and submitted cheerfully, when in fact they were classified as property without any bodily autonomy. The people, who at this time were white male medical Doctors and journalists were telling the stories and used a linguistic shift.

The best experts are those who live, work in function in the space. Ask the locals. When I visit a new city, I ask the taxi drivers, the cashiers and the waitresses where do you like to eat when you get off? Where do you buy your seasonings? Where do you go for fun? The locals are the real experts.
