1. Why is it important for Africans to tell their own stories?
I think it is important for Africans to tell their own stories because they know their culture, experiences, and communities. Hearing from African authors, artists, and leaders helps us see Africa beyond what we may have heard or seen in the media. Their stories help us learn about the people, their traditions, ideas, and accomplishments. As an elementary librarian, I want my students to have books and resources that give them a better understanding of Africa and its people.
2. Reflecting on the sources I use
I do not currently teach about Africa, but I am learning how to bring the subject into my classroom. As I develop my curriculum, I want to include books by African authors, stories about young African leaders, and examples of how young people are using technology to make a difference. I believe hearing directly from Africans will help my students gain a better understanding of their lives and experiences. I want them to see that Africa has many stories to tell, and there is so much more to learn than what they may already know.
