Nsibidi is an ancient, indigenous system of ideographic and pictographic symbols originating from the Cross River region (primarily associated with the Ejagham/Ekoi people) in southeastern Nigeria and parts of Cameroon. Historians place the appearance of Nsibidi symbols between the 5th and 10th centuries, although some oral traditions trace them back even further. Nsibidi are symbols or combination of symbols that represent a complete concept, object, action, or story. These symbols were found on fabrics, pottery, and walls.
