I chose the lesson centered on Nana Akua Goes to School by Tricia Elam Walker. What I liked about this lesson is how it helps children understand the importance of family, culture, and being proud of who they are. It also teaches students to respect people who may look different from them or have different traditions.

As an elementary librarian and Leader in Me teacher, I can see myself using this book to help students practice kindness, respect, and celebrating differences. I would have students share something special about their family or culture and discuss how we can make everyone feel welcome at school.

I also like that this lesson gives students a way to connect literature to their own lives. It supports my goal of teaching children about Africa through meaningful stories that help them see the people, cultures, and experiences beyond common stereotypes. I believe this would be a useful lesson for helping students build understanding and respect for others.
