I really appreciated the opportunity to think about what a person who has been displaced has to be forced to accept. Dr. Agha's personal experiences and knowledge really opened my eyes. Concepts like the important of a name a place is given by its people versus a name that another culture gives it, the work that a person chooses versus the work that another culture assumes that they will do, and the way a home is designed purely for basic human functions versus a home being designed focused on how people use the space to truly live were very eye-opening.
Having this new knowledge will be helpful when planning lessons that focus on discussions about cultural exploration and the reasons behind it, what happens to the people and the land that is being taken, and how people adapt and resist when they are forced to become a marginalized minority.
