The professor described the overall impact of colonialism on her ancestors in Nubia.  The creation of damns by the British forced Nubians to move due to flooding.  This displacement meant leaving behind homes and historically fertile crop lands.  Knowledge of the land was displaced and forced to change as the Nubian people adapted to the circumstances connected to British Colonialism.

The professor also provides the example of home as a contested geographic space.  The government sought to move people into government designed homes. The government designed homes were minimalist and a much smaller footprint than traditional homes.  What the government designed homes misunderstood was the multi-purpose nature of the traditional homes. The traditional homes were courts, places for sorting harvest, wedding venues and more.  The traditional homes were public places and communal places. In comparison, the government homes were conceptualized as private domains.

In both cases, Dr. Agha points out the extractive nature of British rule.  It was a reductionist approach to governance that prioritized pulling as much value out of the land as possible and exporting that value back to Britain.
