The geography being contested is the Nubian people’s land, homes, and farmland. Colonialism played a role because the building of dams forced people to leave their homes and change their way of life. The government also changed how homes were designed without understanding the importance of family and community gatherings.
As an elementary librarian and Leader in Me teacher, I could bring this idea into my classroom by helping students explore how land, homes, and communities affect people’s lives. Students could compare communities in Africa with their own communities and discuss how changes to the land can affect families, traditions, and culture. This would help students understand that geography is not just about places on a map, but also about the people who live there.
