In this lecture, I learned that traditional Nubian homes were places for community activities, weddings, and harvesting crops. However, their land and homes are contested because the government changed where Nubian people lived and how they used their land. British colonialism led to dam construction that flooded Nubian land and forced people to move. Nubians lost their homes and fertile farmland. Colonial rule focused on extracting resources rather than protecting local communities and their way of life. I would have my 6th grade students compare traditional Nubian homes with government-designed homes to understand how space affects people's daily lives and communities. We could also look at historical maps to see how colonialism changed land and forced people to move. This would help students understand that geography is not just about places, but also about people's culture, history, and identity.
