The Ajami script was developed around 1000AD and is still used today. It is used in the Niger Valley. The languages that use this script are Kanuri, Hausa, Fulani, Wolof and Yoruba. Because different languages use this script, some symbols may differ acros language use. Some artifacts that show the Ajami script are records of various things. These records include texts regarding math, astronomy, religion, and poetry.

Although Ajami is still used today, because it is passed down through families, it is vulnerable to being lost. According to the article “Digitizing Ajami, a Centuries Old African Script”, there are efforts to try to preserve it. At Boston University, Director of the African Studies Center, Ngom is working to preserve and digitize Ajami. He has worked with a large network of others to gain access to scripts to digitize them. This is particularly important because it brings to light the fact that it is not only oral histories in sub-Saharan Africa.
