For this lesson module, which would be for a high school world history class, I would have students first complete a KWL chart about martyrs following a brief discussion of martyrs throughout history. I would then have students read the article about the Martyrs of Cordoba, and would also have them read a follow-up piece on the Egyptian Coptic Martyrs, that were killed by ISIS adherents in 2015 on a beach in Libya. Students would then pick apart the articles and answer questions about the role of martyrdom in history, how it could be used as a source of political power, and the power dynamic between the martyr and their assassin.
