Zanele Muholi’s work counteracts the dominant belief, often imposed by the government, that either all LGBTQIA+ people are evil and out to convert people, or that they do not exist in the country. The photos show these persons as ordinary people, with pride in themselves and their cultures. By darkening the photos, they also show pride in Blackness, as opposed to the belief in the evil in black shown by European cultures.

The works are primarily for those in them, for Black, African, and queer people. Only secondarily are they for those outside, to show them that these people are just like them.

Komla Dumor speaks of the individuality of the nations of Africa, but does not dive as deep into the individuals of Africa. Muholi is working in a granularity of Dumor's world, in the everyday.

Just as their work shows that there are LGBTQIA+ people in Africa, it also differentiates them from the Diaspora, from the First World queer communities, and from artists and photographers among the colonials and their cultures. They show the intersection of African queer identities.

While I would not directly use these resources, as I work in the STEM subjects, they are valuable to use as a way to show that African people, and queer people, exist, and are just as valuable as role models.
