In January of 1904 Germany killed many Herero and Nama people who had tried to start a rebellion against colonization. In 2021, Germany admitted the genocide but they did not apologize. Germany made a promise to pay 1.1billion in Euros because of their actions. The people making the requests for reparations are indigenous traditional authorities, descendants of survivors, advocacy organizations, political representatives, and human-rights organizations.
These people seek reparations for the killing of millions of people by the German colonizers, for displacing people, for stealing their resources, and for putting them in concentration camps. Courts that have been affiliated with the cases are in the US and in Namibia. The case for reparations is on-going and has been debated for years in the German senate (the Bundestag).
People who follow the case criticize Germany who has apologized for atrocities against Jewish people, but not for the harm done to the people of these ethnic groups in southwest Africa.
