I integrate discussions about the Trivium and Quadrivium in a course I teach on the history and public value of the humanities, where we also discuss the roots of science. I’ve also used the images in the first reading, showing the evolution of numerals to what we recognize today, and students have been wowed. There’s no doubt at all on my part that science is part of a humanities classroom – it was thanks in large part to medieval scholars that science began to take root as a discipline. Discussing topics like this helps to counter the persistent misconception that science and humanities are separate. Cue C.P. Snow and the Two Cultures…
