I'll See You in Ijebu is a wonderful book about a girl living in Lagos who goes to visit Muslim family in Ijebu to celebrate Eid al-Adha.  Readers are introduced to descriptions of food, including stewed beans and bread for breakfast, crunchy dundun, sweet puff puff, jollof, and ram intestine.  This book fits nicely into my curricular theme of food!

The discussion guide has many questions focused on food (particularly the sensory experiences of food) and the role of food in celebration, giving children the opportunity to reflect on their own food experiences which could be the basis of a comparing/contrasting activity.   This supports my essential question of How do people care for one another through food?

The street hawker activity described in the guide would be a fun writing and role playing activity for students while exploring the role of markets in communities.  It also ties nicely to an Anna Hibiscus story we read called "The Girls Who Sell Oranges."
