I liked how this lesson combines African history, literature, and hands-on activities to teach students about the importance of preserving cultural heritage. It highlights Timbuktu as an important center of Islamic scholarship and shows that ancient manuscripts covered many subjects, including science, astronomy, religion, and history. I especially liked the activity where students interview family or community members and create their own handwritten manuscripts. This helps students connect the lesson to their personal experiences while developing research, writing, and critical-thinking skills. I would use this lesson because it encourages students to appreciate their own history and understand why preserving stories and historical documents is important for future generations.
